It was supposed to be a great honor to be a fairy godmother — or, at least, that’s what Alvina had been taught to believe.

Instead, she ended up keeping crying girls company and rubbing their backs as they sobbed over their princes who had cheated on them with the scullery maids.

“There, there,” she would say in a soothing voice. “Maybe we can find you a new one, hmm?”

But the next one somehow always managed to be worse. And the next, and the next.

Soon enough there were more unhappy girls than there were dashing (and eligible) princes.

Delightful.

This is a part of my endeavor to go back to writing tighter fiction with more stringent word counts. It’s just one attempt at the 100 Story Challenge because I thought it would be a good exercise to do to keep my imagination sharp. We’ll see how it goes.
