The Exception

A Poem

call me crazy,
but have we met before?

or is this some fever dream
i’m going to forget as soon as i wake up?

you can lay out the map,
and i’ll trace the lines and curves
leading to your deepest heart of hearts.

and i know it’s scary
to let yourself be known
to a cruel world.

but tomorrow’s another day
and i think you’re the exception
to all the rules i’ve lived by.

is it too much or not enough?
i never know what’s normal and what’s not.

someday is on the horizon,
and i think i’d like to meet you there just once.

you can test the waters all you like
and give yourself every excuse,
but maybe i’ll wait for you.

and i’d understand completely
if you want to walk away right now
and never look back on this scene.

but tomorrow’s already calling,
and i have to go before i miss out
on having the adventure of a lifetime.
