The End of the World in an Hourglass
100 Faces in 100 Stories — No8
No one might ever know how the last gasp of breath from the universe would sound.
In the distance, I saw the waves retreat from shore as if the waters were, for once, afraid of something greater than themselves.
I remembered how to pray only in the seconds before everything went dark again.
Somewhere in the distance, I heard a scream.
The shadows felt so heavy, so heavy.
One craving remained: the pull of light dawning nearby.
“Test subject ninety-nine is not faring well,” came a disembodied voice from far off.
“That’s fine,” said another. “We always have tomorrow.”
