The sunflower appeared on Abigail’s face on the last day of summer.

While Abigail panicked, her mother was totally calm.

“I wondered when you would bloom,” Mother said, looking teary-eyed as she gazed upon her daughter.

“You knew about this?” Abigail asked, stunned enough that she stopped plucking at the sunflower’s petals.

Mother nodded. “Mine was a rose,” she said, brushing her fingertips against her cheek as if she could still feel the ghost of the flower. “But yours is lovely too, dear.”

Abigail stared. “So it goes away?”

“That depends. How do you feel about kissing a boy?”

This is a part of my endeavor to go back to writing tighter fiction with more stringent word counts. It’s just one attempt at the 100 Story Challenge because I thought it would be a good exercise to do to keep my imagination sharp. We’ll see how it goes.
