The Emperor’s Throne
#100StoryChallenge — No24
Some whispered that the emperor had grown mad.
His crimson throne, shaped like flames of war, had become tainted with the bloodshed of his political enemies. The world was changing outside his walled stronghold, and empires had fallen out of fashion long ago.
Worse — the magic that had once thrummed like the pulse of the world had begun to die.
He could feel only flickers of his own second heartbeat.
Someday soon he would perish from someone’s blade at his throat.
Until then, he’d cut down anyone who tried to cross him.
No god had promised him an easy road.
