The Devil’s Sister
Did poison fill her veins and make her heart toxic?
You may know the tale of the devil — the morning star that plummeted from Heaven above as his angel wings crumbled to ash during the descent.
Did you know he had a sister?
She was nameless, like a star that burned out before it had the chance to be discovered. Once, she had been his shadow, never far from his side. But when he was thrown from Heaven, she followed after him, reaching for his hand and grasping hold of him before the fall killed him.
Her wings too began to dissipate, feather by feather, but they both made it to the ground before those last traces of Heaven disappeared as if they had never been in the first place.
Her skin lost its glow, but her brother? He remained radiant, ever the keeper of light even with his disgrace.
They didn’t speak as they walked the newly created earth. He was solemn, perhaps embarrassed, with what had happened in the court of angels — but he was also angry. He burned with the indignity of it all; anyone who might have glimpsed him then might have thought he was a man on fire.
But his sister was a blot on the landscape, more silhouette than figure.
