The Devil I Loved

A Poem

the moments built up
as sands in the hourglass,
and we fell in swirls of time
so far removed from the world

oh, you were perfection —
or that’s how I saw you —
but I could never have charted
the paths of our fiery end

your words became tangled
with one too many lies,
and I was the fool for thinking
you were just trying to protect me

but no —
you were saving yourself
each and every time
you opened your mouth

the hourglass shattered,
and our little world dissolved
in a shower of glass and fury
and time, so much time, lost

maybe I should have known better
than to trust in the power of love
to save me from the hell of earth —
but, no, you were just another devil

our little hourglass abode
went up in smoke and flames,
and the ice came after the ashes
because we froze each other out
