The Day the World Left God Behind
A Modern-Day Fable
The buzz in the room was nearly electric. As Delilah sat in the psych ward, her eyes kept straying to the television that showed an old Batman cartoon where Catwoman was running for her life. Over and over they chased her till she disappeared in a plume of smoke.
Other patients began to shuffle into the room because it was nearly time for breakfast. When Delilah received her tray, she looked down at the contents and sighed. The fresh fruit looked dry, drained of all its juices, while the apple they had brought began to rot almost as soon as she bit into it. The rest looked like fast food trash that made her stomach squirm with distaste.
Everyone else kept their heads down, numb to the present moment, while Delilah sat back and traced each face she saw. An alcoholic, a kleptomaniac, and a con artist — those were the few assumptions she could make from the energy singing to her from their auras. No one ever looked up at her, instead just spooning in oatmeal or cereal or cold scrambled eggs into their mouths and then swallowing without tasting anyhing at all.
Delilah pushed her tray away and stood, restless, before she walked back to her room.
This place was beginning to feel like a cage.
