The sword had been a gift from her sister.

“You need to know how to take care of yourself. Father may be king, but that doesn’t mean he’s going to be able to protect you forever.”

Offense may have been the first response. Instead, she hugged the scabbard and its blade to her chest.

That was long before the coup. Before the revolution. Before her sister’s death.

The only thing that saved her was the people’s belief she was a mere pawn in this war.

“Such a lovely damsel,” one man cooed.

Those were the last words he ever said.

This is a part of my endeavor to go back to writing tighter fiction with more stringent word counts. It’s just one attempt at the 100 Story Challenge because I thought it would be a good exercise to do to keep my imagination sharp. We’ll see how it goes.
