The Colors of You and Me

A Poem

you were the blue of me
when the colors faded
and left me with nothing
but a black-and-white view

you were the red of me
when I couldn’t say a word
but you understood —
because you loved me most

you were the blue of me
when the rivers calmed
and I shed no more tears
to call back to a sorry life

you were the red of me
when I couldn’t lash out
to everyone who’d hurt me —
those enemies of yesterday

you were the blue of me
when there were apologies,
too little and too late,
nothing I’d ever accept

you were the red of me
when I hid in closets
as the old panic came on
like I’d never escaped at all

you were the blue of me
to keep all the hurt away —
those wounds I bore
that became today’s scars
