The Birthday Girl
What would the night bring?
“Erin, come on. It’s your big day. Don’t you just wanna let loose and have some fun?”
Lara couldn’t believe her roommate was just going to languish in the apartment on her birthday. The thought was practically anathema to Lara, who had always grown up with large family birthday celebrations over the years.
Erin shifted her eyes uneasily towards Lara. “What did you have in mind?”
Lara twirled a strand of hair around her finger and made a soft humming noise. “How about Jackson’s bar? You know he won’t card us.”
“Why does everything fun to you have to involve drinking?”
Lara let out a whoosh of a sigh and sank back against the couch cushions. “Okay, scratch that. No bars. How about a party then? I’m sure I could get an invite from someone downtown. What about that?”
When Erin didn’t answer straightaway, Lara groaned. “What’s the problem now? You’ve got something against parties?”
“Why can’t we just hang out like usual? Maybe stream a movie? Make some popcorn and kick back?”
Lara shook her head. How many times had Erin practically begged to stay inside the apartment the last few weeks? It was madness. “Is this about Tom? Is that why you don’t want to go out?”
