The Birdcage Princess

100 Faces in 100 Stories — No12

--

I was the first one you chose. My feathers were the colors of a morning sky, the first blush of sunrise, the last kiss of moonlight.

Your fingertips brushed against me, and my wings stretched to become limbs.

Soon enough I stood on human legs and stared with eyes that suddenly saw so much less.

“What have you done?” I spoke in a voice that wasn’t birdsong.

You smiled as if you were pleased. “You’ve become magic incarnate.”

I stared because now I knew the weight of human arrogance.

I would never know what it was like to fly again.
