how can it be
that poets always lose
the threads that be
even as they strive for more?

hope
is a facsimile,
and fairy tales
are wayward trends indeed.

who are the heroes,
and who are the villains?
we think we know,
but then we look at ourselves

in the mirror
and see
something
much like regret.

little red riding hood
could have claimed
the axe,
yet she did not.

and so the big bad wolf
lived another day
to blow down houses
and spirit lives away again.

where did he go?
oh, that’s the question, isn’t it,
even as you wonder what will happen
when the happily ever after comes at last.
