His hands find her face, tracing circles along her skin, till she can’t help but feel like she’s going to cry. She knows he would kiss her tears away — he would do anything for her — but she feels sinful and ashamed. She wants to hide away, bundle up her imperfections and pack her bags and leave on the next train out.

It’s such a tempting idea. But she can’t help but sit in this bed he wants to make theirs in time.

“I’m not going anywhere,” he says, his voice dripping with such sincerity that tears do begin to fall from her eyes. His thumbs brush against the tears, one by one, as he just watches her with heartbreak in his eyes. “Princess, you have no idea how long I’ve waited for you.”

Most men look at her with the idea of sex lingering behind their eyes — but she doesn’t sense that from him. He sees her as an unfinished painting, a half-written song, a storybook with a plot scribbled out in bursts and motions.

“Let’s learn together,” he says. “Please. Let’s try to make this thing between us work.”

“Why me?” she asks, her voice soft, and he sighs as if he’s losing patience. But, again, she doesn’t feel impatience emanate from him. Instead, he’s all love and caring as if he’s come alive from the proverbs and verses of Solomon.
