oh, dear aphrodite left me listless
when she introduced you to me,
dark eyes playing tricks,
while i had no clue

oh, perhaps you were eros
dressed in a different garb,
but i didn’t know better
before i fell to my knees

oh, maybe you were icarus
in flaming lights triumphant
while i was lost in the underworld
of my own sad making

oh, i think you’ve got me under a spell
that will never cease, never cease —
because i’m just a mortal dressed in rags
while you’re something else on a pedestal

oh, the gods were never kind to me,
so i know they’ll never let me have you —
not when witches and sorceresses walk the earth
and speak enchantments in your ear

oh, i know minds are not the ways to hearts,
but i thought i could have enchanted you
with a well-timed ballad of the soul —
but you were looking elsewhere, distracted
