The Aftermath of Deception

A Poem

there’s a looming thrill
for every couple on the edge
of that path called love.

kisses heighten to more,
and touch becomes akin
to something like possession.

i’d say he never loved you,
but you wouldn’t believe me
since you only saw the good in him.

but i watched you, you know i did,
because i cared so much more for you
than i ever did for myself.

maybe in another life
i could have charmed the smile
right onto your lips like a timeless spell.

there’s no going back now —
we’re not who we used to be —
but that doesn’t mean what we had

wasn’t beautiful.

there’s a creeping touch
to the idea of yours, mine, ours
as if you’ve ceased to be separate people.

beds become a low fortress
with dead-eyed attempts at passion
and too many lies exchanged in the dark.
