The Afterglow

oh, winter’s solemn kiss dissolved again
as the sun warmed our skin in a familiar way —
where did all that time go?

maybe there were forgotten embraces
that we never sought to claim as memories
because it was easier to pretend we didn’t care.

but, oh, I remember summer days of long ago
when you were mine and I was yours —
the perfect duo to take on a dying world.

the heat brought a flush to our cheeks,
and we missed the days we basked in chill
manufactured from power not our own.

did you think we’d make it this long?
would you have bet on us?
or did your hope only go so far?

the world around us commences a dance
of farewell, of fading stars, of dimming lights —
and we wait to sit in the afterglow of it all —

because no matter what happens,
I’ll always remember these days
when it was just you and me together.
