In the tumult of the times — so many instances where death reigned supreme while chaos reigned — all the gods had forgotten that death was not always by chance. Sometimes, it was calculated.

The Book of the Dead was not just an Egyptian invention. Some thought Hades had it, others thought Ares had it, and some thought it had been lost to the ages.

But no. Thanatos was still out there, alive and thriving. He had taken a few names and faces through the years, but his favorite was the one he wore in plain sight: a popular actor who wore a smile and waved and greeted his fans with aplomb.

It was a perfect act, really. They should have given him more credit when it came to the acting. He sang sad love songs and tried his best to fly under the radar while standing in the spotlight.

Some thought he loved Psyche. Others, Athena or Aphrodite.

But, no, the one he loved most was Cassandra — the forgotten mortal even now that war was stirring among the old hurts between the mistreated mortals and the gods up on high.

Medusa and her daughter were proxies, if nothing more, for him to get his hands on the Cassandra he had always craved despite what his parents said…
