Tell Me I’m the Villain

A Poem

blame me —
that’s what you want to do, right?
or do you have some sob story
to endear you to the masses?

maybe I’ll believe you
when you say I’m the worst thing
ever to happen to you
if you can give me the receipts,

or do you think that maybe
you just need a scapegoat
for all the ups and downs
in your sorry little life?

but sure,
cast me in your story,
and I’ll wear my black dress
with all the glitter to make me shine.

when the people see me,
do you think they’ll still be bothered
by all the drama you caused and leaked —
or are you afraid they’ll take my side?

you can try to sell your pretty lies —
but, babe, I’ll always come out on top
because the people love me
and gave me a crown.

tomorrow, they’ll forget you —
but me, I’m a legacy waiting to flourish
in every history’s textbook…
