twisted, turned, toppled —
oh, that was the tragedy of us,
and somewhere along the way
we lost each other in the tides of time

and i thought i wanted you
above everything else

except
you gave me up
first

tied like a knot,
spun like a web,
frayed beyond repair —
oh, that was you and me

and there were no ways to tell our story
beyond the tropes of scandal

except
you were the one to say
goodbye

wretched, wounded, whispered —
oh, that was my life every day
until i got off my knees
and stopped crying

and i thought you were the answer
to my every prayer

except
you were the devil
in love’s skin

ripped like a bandage,
threaded like a needle,
punished like a sinner —
oh, that was me
