hello, sunshine

beacons tip their hats
as we play along to all the songs
we already know by heart

and i thought i knew you

(but we were just kidding ourselves)

happiness wasn’t mine,
but it could be yours —
don’t you think?

we say we’re just fools in love,
but there’s no one counting cards
(not this time)

i was a standard-issue suit
while you were undone
in your button-down shirt

(oh, what a crying shame)

i’m laying the bets down on the table,
and all i see is your green glass stare
(like a drained bottle of whisky, like a lie —

like a patent leather promise)

breakfast for two
wasn’t enough for you,
so you went on your way

(and it’s like this again and again)

i was always stunned
by your nonchalance,
your smile behind
