Summer’s Tide

Poetry

it was supposed to be just another day

of you and me glimpsing dragonflies

but you were in far-off places

from the way your eyes gleamed.

*

it was supposed to be our time,

moments spent in pure bliss

as our feet brushed water bright

and our laughs filled the air.

*

it was supposed to be fun,

easy and light and ours,

yet I was losing you in inches

as you dreamt of another girl.

*

it was supposed to be summer,

the same as always and ever after —

a future that we would share

because that’s what we always did.

*

it was supposed to be love,

at least a hint of it to share,

yet I wasn’t what you wanted

and I could see her in your eyes.

*

you were supposed to be mine

a silent vow with the universe —

but we were so young then

and promises just didn’t last.
