Summer Nights With You

A Poem

hey, remember that summer
when we slept under the stars
and thought life would never
catch up and imprison us?

you smelled of the pool —
chlorine and sun, a heady mix —
and it was easy to think
we might have forever like this

you would tangle your fingers
in my hair, pulling just right
while I counted down minutes
till our midnight hour came

hey, remember those nights
when I promised you my all,
and you smiled at me —
for me, only for me?

you didn’t say a thing,
yet I filled in your silence
with secret promises
and their perfect signs

you were the enigma,
the mistake I’d always make,
but I told myself it was okay
because I had you for the moment

I should have known
everything would disappear
by sunrise touching the horizon —
that was you, all the way
