Such a Pity
Poetry
there’s been talk of young Delilah,
so pretty was she in the summer sun;
she made all the boys run wild
in thought and action all alike.
they’re saying she’s gone like a blink,
somewhere off with someone she loved,
maybe even a boy who charmed her —
anyone who could get her away from here.
we’re not telling tales, mind your manners;
that’s just the way her story goes,
like a comet streaking ‘cross the sky
or a rainstorm in the drought of July.
you would say that, wouldn’t you,
that maybe she’s better off this way —
but think of her poor mama dear
who cradled her from crib to adolescence.
Delilah may be just another girl,
but she was raised to act different,
see different, be different —
not just another runaway girl.
I hope she’s looking at the stars,
somewhere maybe nicer than this,
and thinking that maybe she did
make a mistake in leaving after all.
Such a pity, such a shame —
for the end of girls like Delilah.
