they think it’s funny
when I tell them
I write —
as if there’s shame
in words concocted
from an overactive mind

“how do you think your
movies
and songs
and plays
and shows
are made —
if not from
a writer’s head?”

but I don’t say
the damning words
because I figure
I’ll just name
characters after them
in some draft someday

and we all know
what happens next

they don’t think
there’s money
in word-smithing —
and I would agree
if not for all those
happy accidents

“how do you expect me
to discount
the one-in-a-million
shots that soar
like fireworks
to enthrall
the world —
all born from words?”
