Starfish

A Sonnet

ev’ry night you kiss a girl by shadow,

while I wait on your each gesture and word,

till I feel like just a clever sideshow —

who am I kidding, all the lines are blurred.

*

even your gifts, in vain, fall too shallow —

why should it matter, I was your game’s fool —

though you once left me soft like marshmallow

and I was yarn unwinding from a spool.

*

the beach leaves its treasures each sunrise morn,

and you think you’re a wit with a starfish —

it would be so easy to hate, heart torn —

but you’re still a charmer, your grin wolfish.

*

we wouldn’t last beyond August’s red sun,

but there’s no lie to say you were true fun.
