A Poem

did you ever think love was a winding path
through a murky forest in autumn glaze,
or did you see it as fireworks in summer,
the boom right before the heartbreak?

did you ever think you were an hourglass,
waiting for all the sand to spill down
and foretell a future you couldn’t see
all while wishing on pennies in a well?

did you ever see the world as yours,
just an amusement park for the senses
while you doled out your attention
in spurts and waves to your waiting fans?

did you ever look in the mirror
and doubt what you saw there,
or were you one of the golden ones
who saw beauty in spades no matter what?

did you ever think to yourself,
“What am I worth?” —
or is that only for sorry people like me,
the ones riddled green with envy?

did you ever foresee this future
where you’re not in a straight line
but a curve, a bent arrow, a circle —
or was that just me by my lonesome?
