Sparks to Flames to Ashes

A Poem

you were the spark
from your coal-black eyes on mine
down to your pale fingertips
pressing against my pulse
as my heart began to race

you were the flame
from your burning laugh
all the way to the heat of your mouth
against mine, against mine,
while you kissed me dizzy

you were the ashes
from your cold disregard after,
lingering like a haze,
as if you couldn’t look at me,
as if i’d disgusted you

i was the spark
dying down, dying down
like you’d thrown cold water at me
just to drown out the passion
you’d inspired in me

i was the flame
threatening to go out
with barely a whisper
while you stared at me
as if i were an alien thing

i was the ash
left behind, left behind
like all the pages had been destroyed
in the blaze of your fervent wish
to get rid of any trace…
