Songs Filled the Night Air

A Sonnet

the June drizzle of the day soon gave way

to patent tunes from new indie rockers,

and the crowd continued to sway and play

even as some tried to sing like squawkers.

*

you weren’t there that night — you were still a ghost —

but I closed my eyes and imagined you,

standing beside me ‘cuz I missed you most,

your hand in mine, a piece put back in skew.

*

then the last song ended, a parting hint,

and my cheeks were wet from both tears and rain;

looking up brought the moon’s pale, welcome glint,

but thinking of you still brought me fresh pain.

*

there was a medley as I tapped your name,

knowing not if I’d coax or douse this flame.
