Something Sacred

A Poem

i try to paint the sky
of my mind, of my mind
with odes to the past
and scatters of stars
that are too much
for this world

i try to remember words
of wisdom, of wisdom
when i feel myself slipping
down rabbit holes,
away from all sanity
and peace of mind

i try to tell myself
it’s okay, it’s okay
even as the chips fall
out of my favor
every damn time
as if i’m cursed

i try to recall your voice
on rainy days, rainy days
when no one else
would get through
because you’re the one
who colored me blue

i try to face the facts
of yesterday, yesterday
for all these mistakes
i bore too often
with my own hands
held over a burning fire
