oh, there are dark shadows
where our hearts used to beat —
and i wonder how it became this way
that we can no longer face each other true.

oh, you kissed me once
as if you were saying goodbye,
and i didn’t know where i’d end
because everything began with you.

oh, i traced your smile
and thought parting would be
just a temporary distraction to bear —
but, no, you left like you said you would.

oh, there are plenty of scars —
the remembrance of wounds
from other boys’ taunts and scorn —
and i didn’t think you’d join the queue.

oh, i kissed you awake
just to see you smile at me —
but now that passive want is gone,
replaced by something so much heavier.

oh, you sang to my monsters
and didn’t shy away from them,
but now i stand and hear them howl
all because you left them to fend for themselves.
