So Sang the Seashore
A Poem
do you ever think of those summer days
a long time ago now when we were just kids,
how we laughed as the waves crashed against us
and didn’t care who heard us scream at the top of our lungs?
i can still remember it all as if it were yesterday:
your brother ran across the beach at lightning speed,
but you and i meandered along as if time were just ours
while we pretended not to feel our hearts hammer in our chests.
the sun beat down, blazing hot, on those sandy dunes
while your dad cooked on the grill for yet another lunch —
but we walked as if there was no time limit in our minds
and i couldn’t help but keep staring into your blue, blue eyes.
the sky would turn from blue to pink to a lavender haze,
and your mom would call us back to the present far too soon —
and i’d lift my head and smile, embarrassed, to yell an answer,
only to realize — too late, too late — how close we were to holding hands.
but the spell broke as you began to walk away, so quick,
while the sounds of those ocean tides…
