Sleepless Nights

A Poem

midnight comes with a rush
of clandestine meetings
that occur only in my dreams

and then i lie awake,
tangled in sheets,
staring up at shadows

and it’s almost enough
to close my eyes
and drift off

but you have never made
things easy for me —
in real life or in slumber.

then it’s just another sleepless night
chasing so much lost time
till there’s nothing left.

it would be so much easier
just to forget, just to forget —
but my mind’s not so kind.

and my vision’s hazy,
drinking in all the dark
as if there’s no other cure.

my brain flickers
through visions of you
and the one you chose.

my thoughts derail me
and i’m losing so much,
inch by inch by inch.
