The witch who offered to help me bore half of a skull’s face. I couldn’t even look at her, but a part of me pitied her too. What had a life like hers been like?
Her torn mouth curved in a sardonic smile. “Am I really so unsightly?”
“Yours is a face one would never forget,” I said, unable to malign her.
“Fair enough,” she replied, no hurt in her tone. “You must be desperate for this love potion.”
“It’s the only way to save the kingdom.”
“Yours is a soft heart, princeling.”
It did not sound like a compliment.
