it’s another night
where i look up at stars
and feel so small in comparison
as if they might burn me up if i look too long

and my heart’s a wary soldier,
tired from one too many wars at play,
till i sank to my knees and wondered again
what it was like to pray and be heard above the noise

things like love don’t last,
but pieces of us linger in spite of it all —
as if we have the potential to be some kind of infinite
except somehow we’ve forgotten how the magic works

it’s another day
where i trace sky patterns
of clouds so far, far away from my grasp
and imagine you were there beside me again

and my soul’s a melting candle
that might sputter out with time and wear —
but somehow i keep the flame burning in the dark
despite the odds, despite the hurt, despite the mistakes

things like trust don’t last
because everything has an expiration date —
but i have faith in you to make things right for yourself
