Silence Won’t Save Us

A Poem

they never tell you
the ending
from the start

they never warn you
about the worst
before you’ve given
your best

they always try to spin
their own little tales
from the threads
of lies

and they think
we’ll just accept
what they give us

oh, I wish I could say
I knew better
but I was just
so blind,
believing
in the sanctity
of people

and not
demagogues
masquerading
as demigods

oh, I wish I could say
this place I call home
would stand up
to the ways
of goodness,
but I am left
praying hopelessly —

because is anyone
really listening
to the small words
of one person?
