The scream is what wakes me up.

My eyes flash open as I’m torn from dreams, and I know that voice as well as I know my own.

“Rebecca!”

I clamber out of my bed, bare feet touching the floor as I scramble for my jeans before stumbling into them one leg at a time. I’m out the door and to the next — the one right across from mine — before the second scream tears through the air. I don’t even offer a care for propriety before I storm into the room.

Then I see Rebecca — dear, dear, dear Rebecca — convulsing on the bed.

I reach for her and cradle her head, bringing her form to my chest as her eyes roll back into her head. The screaming turns into keening, so soft yet so heartbreaking, as I hold her there, trying to steady her in whatever vision she’s lost herself in.

“It’s all right,” I whisper in her ear. “It’s all right. I’m here.”

The noise continues to wind its way through her body and out of her parted lips.

Halfway through the vision, Mrs. Danvers in her gray nightgown comes to the room to look in. I just offer a quick shake of my head towards the door before she nods and leaves, off to tell her superiors about…
