“Goddammit,” I whisper to Geneva as we stand outside the circular alcove erected for the Ritual. “I forgot my knife.”

Geneva sighs. “Do you really need your knife?”

“I like to have it on me at all times. In case things go haywire.”

“Well, lucky for you that I brought a spare,” she says before handing me a sheathed blade. I can’t help grinning at her a little.

“Thanks. You’re a lifesaver.”

I take the blade, and she shakes her head, a small smile pulling at her mouth. “Don’t mention it.”

Then we continue to stand guard outside, just waiting for our next orders. I fidget a little, moving from foot to foot, while Geneva lets out another sigh.

“You always get so impatient,” she says. “What are you going to do when she has a four-hour ritual? Or, heaven forbid, an eight-hour one?”

“You know how I get,” I respond. “I’m worried about her.”

“Don’t be. She’s done this dozens of times, and she hasn’t been possessed yet.”

“Don’t say that. This could be the time that things go wrong.”
