A Poem

“don’t let me go”
were the words i said
as you went off to another galaxy,
far from where i could ever hope to reach.

i wanted you like starfall,
but you weren’t mine to have —
not yet, not yet, not yet —
but i knew you in shades and glimpses.

tomorrow i would dance
in a shroud of shooting stars,
and you would watch from a distance
as if you couldn’t believe me and all i was.

but you were a marvel too,
a soldier standing in the line of fire —
and i admired you with your golden sword
and the armor you carried with such pride.

“transform me,”
i may have said to you
on a different night from this,
but you were far away in the shadows.

i looked for you each day,
and the crumbs you gave me
sufficed as sustenance till the day
i could make you mine at long last.
