Scream Into the Void

A Poem

it closes around your throat
with an intensity
that makes you lose
your breath

and then
you’re counting stars
as you lay back
against the grass

as the waves
of nervous chatter
seep into your blood
like nothing else.

it’s too easy to think
you might have a way
to make the noise
go away forever

and you’re lost
in a cloud
of better worlds
you wish existed

till you’re dizzy
with want
for greater heights,
far from this pit of despair.

it’s just another leap
for your mouth to open
in a soundless cry
to swallow up universes

and you weep
for the pain of it all,
this echoless howl
like a raging heartbeat
