Run Away With Me
A Poem
the old ballads make love seem easy,
so simple and clean —
but that’s not the case at all.
in truth, i would have waited
an eternity on you,
but hearts get bruised every day.
i sat in our corner café
and wondered
where all the time had gone.
you were chasing stars
in other cities
all over the globe.
you had no room for me
sitting alone,
sipping tea and sighing.
the fairy tales make longing seem fun,
true apple and cinnamon —
but that’s not how the story goes.
love is missed texts
on rainy days
when the cab runs late.
love is tired eyes
on long commutes,
too late for an anniversary dinner.
love is this gray space
where i don’t belong
because i’ve perished here before.
