A Poem

away —
that’s where we wanted to be,
gleaming on that far horizon
where the present met the future
and where we could be all we wanted,
free of all doubt and judgment

love —
take my hand in yours,
and hold me close again
just like all those stolen moments
when I was yours and you were mine,
the promise of what could have been

safe —
that’s how I felt in your arms
when storms rattled the windows
and we thought the winds would break us,
and, oh, how I longed to be your safe haven
where the nightmares couldn’t hope to reach

love —
you said we could last forever,
and I believed your every perfect lie
because it was always the hope of mine
for you to be the first, the last, the always —
but why, oh, why did we fall so short?
