Reclaim Your Narrative

A Poem

Tell me the story of you —
I’ll listen close and take down notes
Because you’re the mystery I want to unravel,
Line by line,
Word by word,
Ache by ache.

List me all the reasons why
You never thought yourself good enough
For this world or for anyone —
And I’ll disprove those notions a hundred times,
Anything to do what must be done
To save you from yourself.

Every conversation will lead me
Down the path of knowing you, embracing you,
Doing everything in my power to lift you up
In spite of all those sorry things that try
To tear you down and spit you out
Because this world’s been so cruel.

I’ll jot down every hint of something
That brings a smile to your face,
Joy from earlier days you’d forgotten —
And in those pieces I’ll find the way
To make you realize you’re a treasure,
No matter what anyone else said before.
