Recently, I’ve begun playing around with the infamous AI tool known as ChatGPT.

You’re horrified right now, aren’t you?

Take a deep breath. Let the red fade from your vision. Again, breathe.

I understand the trepidation, the tension, and the fervor surrounding recent discussions about AI. I’ve even had a few discussions with friends about AI that have resulted in very passionate, vocal complaints about the use of such things in the arts. And I understand. We as creators are all concerned about the notion that AI may one day make us obsolete. To say I was dismayed to see ChatGPT pound out so many words in only moments that would take me a few hours is an understatement. It reminded me of how I felt when I watched the AI Jasper do something similar last year.

There’s the idea that this is simple and petty theft at work, but I don’t know if it’s that cut and dry either. On one hand — yes, there is plenty the AI is drawing from, but how can you determine what has helped the AI learn and grow? There are too many gray areas. Should the technology be banned altogether because of this? Is that too harsh? And, on the other hand, AI itself is an innovative tool that…
