100 Faces in 100 Stories — No63

Did you think me weak when you saw me cowering there?

The moon was full, a heavy globe in the sky, as you bared your fangs and snarled in a way that made my insides quiver.

But I held up my hand, palm out, as if I could ward you off or inspire some kind of mercy.

We were beastkind, but that didn’t mean we didn’t have beating hearts.

You sniffed the air. Something in your yellow eyes began to die out.

My ears flattened against my skull.

I wondered if you could smell my fear.

Then you surged forward.
