Poetry

He said he loved the woods and hiking.

She said she never got along with the outdoors.

He wanted kids, two or maybe three.

She thought children were anathema.

He sang on Friday nights at a bin of a bar.

She played pool with a bunch of the guys.

It was a chilly night when they shared a cigarette.

He said he wanted to live out in the countryside,

She laughed and flirted because she was tipsy.

He looked up at the sky and sang a strain of medley.

She tripped over her words as she hummed along.

He liked the way her laugh sounded on the wind.

She liked the way he smiled, a glow lighting his face.

It wasn’t long before they exchanged phone numbers.

He texted her right away with a blitz of emojis.

She left him hanging and didn’t answer till morning.

He wooed her with recipes and pictures of Corgis.

She tried to stay aloof, but she was falling fast.

He visited her at work, a retail job she didn’t mind.

She came to see him every Friday at the bar.

It was the start of a beautiful thing called love.
