Orpheus of the Isle

100 Faces in 100 Stories — No17

--

My mother could have named me Persephone, Ariadne, Aphrodite.

But no. She chose to name me Orpheus.

When I asked her why I wasn’t a Eurydice instead, she laughed.

“You? No. I had a vision before you were born, and you were always destined to be an Orpheus. He looked back and doomed his love. And so will you, Fee.”

My mother knew how to wield cruel words like a knife. I inherited that gift from her.

I supposed that would help — if I was to be the end of someone I loved, at any rate.

And so I waited.
