on her wedding day,
i’ll play pretend
and act like it’s just a game

on her wedding day,
i’ll don the part
of a joyful participant

on her wedding day,
i’ll write in cursive
in a bleached white card

on her wedding day,
i’ll steal a piece of cake
well before the reception begins

on her wedding day,
i’ll laugh with her friends,
all the while i simmer inside

on her wedding day,
i’ll listen more than i’ll talk —
and they’ll think i’m doing just fine

on her wedding day,
i’ll say the proper things
even as i die inside for breath

on her wedding day,
i’ll court a dance or two —
but all the while i’ll wonder

on her wedding day,
i’ll compliment the music
even though i hate it all so much
