Oh, Cast My Body Electric

A Poem

the spark before the burn —
oh, that was you, love,
because you lit me up
and made me crash

it was easy to fall into you
and lose myself for a time,
just to call you my own
while the time ticked down

our hourglass was half-full,
and I thought I’d be okay
just knowing you in crumbs
of what you were willing to give

but the letters weren’t enough
to sate me while you were away —
and I couldn’t count the stars
between where you and I stood

oh, I looked up at the moon
and wondered why I had allowed
my heart to drift towards you
as if there was any hope left

you were a whole lifetime away,
living a scene I couldn’t follow,
and it was so easy to fool myself
the scattered minutes were enough

you doled out attention
in spasms and quakes,
but I wasn’t meant for
that kind of love
