Ode to Matilda
Life Was a Willow and More — #2
The train arrived before Matilda could decide for sure whether she was staying or going.
“You,” she whispered, her fingertips tracing the frosted glass of the empty ticket counter booth. “You, you, you.”
The man she was going to marry had left her, saying her magic was too great for him. But so it went, so it always went.
No man ever stayed.
She felt bound to be disappointed — a magician of a girl wrapped up in patchwork clothing.
What man would ever keep her?
He was always hers to lose.
And she? She always tried to leave first anyway.
